Internship Opportunities
Denkenhouse Press provides an internship twice annually for a Publishing & Editorial Assistant. This internship, at present, offers a rare and rewarding opportunity to help a new independent press carve a unique niche within the publishing industry.
Denkenhouse Press is exclusively dedicated to publishing ‘crossover’ works which bridge serious academic scholarship and intellectually substantial nonfiction trade. This conscious aim is built upon a sustainable model which keeps dependable expertise within the widest possible public reach in the timeliest, most cost-effective manner by the collaborative effort of ethically-driven and public-serving scholars, intellectuals and publishing professionals who share the Denkenhouse vision (see 'History & Mission' page). Building on the same professional print and distribution services as major academic and trade publishers, Denkenhouse is positioned to make an appreciable and worthwhile public impact across North America, Europe and the broader globe (see 'Submissions' page).
This internship offers a rare opportunity to participate directly in the founding-stage development of Denkenhouse as a new and unique independent press, to help shape its communications infrastructure, editorial systems, public identity, and long-term operational culture from the ground up. The position is intended to provide unusually broad exposure to the practical realities of independent publishing in a rapidly changing publishing landscape.
The fellowship follows a remote, work-at-home model. It requires an initial three to (preferred) six month commitment, starting by June 1, 2026, or the earliest possible date thereafter, with the potential for renewal of an additional 3-6 month period. It will initially consist of approximately 5-10 hours of remote work per week, possibly expanding up to a maximum of 15-20 hours as the press begins receiving and processing proposals from prospective authors. The initial focus will be on helping establish and develop the communication and promotional systems that will make an active catalog of available works possible: building social media channels and scholarly outreach networks, helping expand the website, building up both press and author resources, etc. Later work could include communicating with prospective authors, developing proposal-tracking systems, interfacing with potential reviewers, metadata entry and workflows, and other essential publishing operations. Denkenhouse also welcomes suggestions and potential contributions which bring your educational training to bear upon the future vision and success of the press.
Applicants must have completed (or be close to completing) at least the first year of a master’s program in publishing or a closely related field by the beginning of the fellowship period. Strong preference will be given to applicants with substantial grounding in the humanities, broadly understood, whether through undergraduate or graduate study in history, religion, literature, philosophy, political thought, communications, journalism, education, cultural studies, or related disciplines. Denkenhouse is especially interested in applicants who demonstrate serious interest in scholarly and public-facing nonfiction publishing, mission-driven intellectual work, and the evolving future of open access and ethical publishing practices with a public educational aim. Volunteer, nonprofit, educational, or community-service experience is viewed positively but is not required.
This is a fellowship intended primarily as a professional development, mentorship, institutional-building, and career-building opportunity. In addition, it offers a one thousand dollar ($1000.00) stipend paid by Denkenhouse via their educational institution after successful completion of the internship, along with a formal letter of recommendation/commendation to support you in your continuing career aspirations. As Denkenhouse develops, there may also be opportunities for continuing more permanently in this role at the press.
Interested applicants should carefully review the Denkenhouse Press website and its stated vision, commitments, and publishing philosophy in full before applying. Those interested and qualified should submit a application portfolio consisting of the following materials:
>>> A cover letter which succinctly summarizes: (1) what led them into the field of publishing, (2) the most important highlights of their training and experience, (3) their interest in independent ‘crossover’ publishing as reflected in the Denkenhouse vision and model, (4) what they ultimately hope to achieve in terms of their careers and how they see their internship at Denkenhouse contributing to those goals, and (5) what role humanities has played in their upbringing, education and career publishing interests.
>>> A current resume or CV (including college education, employment history, any significant publishing experience, involvement in major extracurricular clubs or activities and volunteer work)
>>> An unofficial copy of their academic transcripts from both undergraduate and current graduate studies
>>> One letter of recommendation from a faculty member, program director, advisor, or other appropriate supervisor within their publishing program who can speak to their reliability, professionalism, communication skills, and suitability for a founding-stage publishing fellowship.
Send application portfolios in a ‘Zip’ folder via email (info@denkenhouse.com) to ‘The Denkenhouse Advisory Board’. Thank you for your interest in Denkenhouse and its unique publishing vision!
